In 1911, Lieutenant Alfred A. Cunningham, was stationed at the Marine Barracks, Philadelphia. On May 16, 1912, Cunningham was detached from duty at the Navy Yard, Philadelphia, and ordered to the aviation camp the Navy had set up at Annapolis, to learn how to fly. He reported May 22, 1912, which is recognized as the Birthday of Marine Corps Aviation. Actual flight training was given at the Burgess Plant at Marblehead, Massachusetts, because only the builders of planes could fly in those days and after two hours and forty minutes of instruction, Cunningham soloed on August 20, 1912.

On May 22, 2012, Marines will have been serving in Marine Aviation for 100 years. You have a unique opportunity to honor all those that have served and died for our country while in Marine Aviation. The Marine Aviation Memorial Tower was designed to honor all Marine Aviation: Aircrew, Mechanics, Clerks and Marines in supporting units.
Take this time to support the Marine Aviation Memorial Tower by donating or joining all Marines from different generations as we conduct our Centennial Celebration in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, AL.
